If you were to let the entire song play, it would contain inappropriate words or imagery for students. Please note, however, that some songs listed (transition songs) were edited by me so only a small portion would play. I kept copies in a folder in my documents on my school computer. If you are interested in this practice, here is a list of songs you could consider purchasing and playing each morning. Students were so good, they were usually ready to go by the time the song snippet ended. We practiced over and over again at the beginning of the school year getting our morning work out and open as fast as possible. For example, when it was time to go over morning work, I'd play the first 10 seconds to Black Eyed Pea's "Let's Get It Started". I would also play a snippet of a song (about 5-30 seconds) when we would transition from one activity to another. I did allow my students to greet each other and dance a little as long as they were also completing the morning routine. In my fourth grade classroom, students understood that they needed to unpack, sharpen their pencil, make their lunch choice (which doubled as checking my attendance), get out homework, and begin working on morning work, all before the song ended. The song gives students a set amount of time to unpack, get out all materials for your class, and helps students shift gears, getting mentally ready for your class. As the song plays, you can greet students at the door by name (and a secret handshake if you're super cool.I was never that cool). Set the tone every day by playing a song as students enter your classroom. Terry Allen & the Panhandle Mystery Band.Willie Alexander and the Boom Boom Band.King Sunny Ade and the New African Beats.
